A private corporation which has a very public mission. Moreover, that mission has expanded in scale and scope over the last three decades. Incorporated in 1965, the agency came into being as part of a nationwide, federally-funded, community action movement whose focus was to intimately involve poor people in developing their own solutions to persistent poverty.

Transitional Housing

This is a scattered site transitional housing program serving homeless families with children. This program is designed to help families locate and maintain stable housing, provide families with case management services and assist them in setting long-term goals to achieve self-sufficiency.

Home Weatherization

Our weatherization program is for low-income families and individuals. Our professional crew will insulate attics, walls, and floors. The crew will also conduct air duct sealing and minor repairs related to weatherization based on the need of the structure and the ability of the weatherization programs.

Minor Home Repairs

This federally funded program can help make minor repairs to eligible owner occupied residences. The whole home must be brought up to Housing Quality Standards. The total cost of the repairs cannot exceed the assessed value of the structure or $24,999.00. The program is offered as a grant or a lien based on household annual income.

Housing Opportunities for People with Aids

This program provides rental, mortgage and utility assistance to individuals with HIV/AIDS. Case management services and supportive services are available through the HIV/AIDS Care Consortium.

Rental Assistance

There are limited funds for rental/mortgage assistance. These are offered to persons who are homeless or have a 3-5 day eviction notice.

Housing and Homeless Services

Group homes, emergency shelters, and transitional living centers provide housing on a temporary basis for varying amounts of time.  They:

• serve the homeless by providing food and overnight lodging. 

• provide educational, counseling and vocational services to homeless and destitute individuals and families for extended periods.

• address long-term specific issues of youth for whom family care is undesirable or unavailable. Education, counseling, health care and specific training seek to meet the needs of such groups as pregnant teens, emancipated minors, and wards of the juvenile court.

• address specific health or societal driven needs of particular populations.

Family service programs help families and needy individuals with emergency food, housing, utility assistance and other temporal needs.

RCS supports the needs of individuals in the community through the following programs.

Seven days a week, RCS gathers good food from area grocery stores, restaurants and produce growers that would otherwise be destroyed.  This food is used in our Food Pantry, Soup Kitchen and Shelter, and shared with three senior/disabled adults housing sites and after-school programs for at-risk youth.

Soup Kitchen
The Soup Kitchen is operated through volunteers who prepare, cook and serve a hot nutritious meal from 10:30 to 11:45 Monday – Friday and 3:30 – 4:45 Saturday and Sunday.

In addition, RCS provides our clients with basic health screenings through the services of East Carolina University School of Nursing.

Food Pantry
Food orders are prepared by volunteers for clients to take home.  Each order is based on the family size and should provide three meals a day for one week.

Emergency Shelter for the Homeless
RCS operates a 20-bed shelter for homeless individuals and families.  Our Shelter Director works closely with each guest in guiding them to self-sufficiency.  We work with many local programs and agencies in achieving success for our guests.

Clothing Closet
A large selection of seasonal used clothing is available for people of all ages and sizes, as well as school uniforms and career-wear.

Financial Assistance
Assistance is given to families who are past-due with their rent and/or utilities.  Vouchers are also available for prescription medications.

Transportation Assistance
Vouchers are provided for local transportation needs through CARTS, or gas vouchers for out-of-town doctor’s appointments or work-related travel.  Bus tickets may be purchased for critical long distance travel needs.

The Emergency Food Assistance Program
TEFAP provides USDA food commodities once each quater for families of Craven County who receive food stamps.  Marines from Cherry Point always volunteer with this project to provide the heavy lifting.

Warehouse Distribution
Gently used furniture and other household items are stored in our warehouse and given to families in need.

Disaster Relief and Recovery
Families affected by disasters (hurricanes, flood, fire, etc.) can recieve assistance in their recovery.  In the event of a large-scale disaster, this program will serve as a coordinated response of the faith community.
